Apart from the 1st District, all the others are administered by submayors (subprefeitos), each of them appointed by the municipal mayor.
The 1st District, Sede, contains the urban perimeter of Santa Maria, i.e. the city itself. For its greater complexity when compared to the other ones, the Seat District is further subdivided into 8 administrative regions (regiões administrativas) and 41 neighbourhoods (bairros).
Following is a list of the Seat District's bairros organized per administrative region, hereinafter called RAs (from Portuguese: região administrativa).
